About Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils, both externally and internally, for protecting health, healing and cosmetic purposes. With the help of aromatherapy, we can further increase the quality of our lives, as it can be integrated in the medicine cabinet, both for prevention and curing. We consider it an important element of future healing.

The origin of aromatherapy goes back thousands of years. Although it is an exotic form of curing, it can be extremely effective. Aromatherapy has come back into fashion lately, mainly being used to relieve stress. The valuable oils extracted from gum, resin, bark and petals were used by ancient Egyptians for medical and religious purposes, partly because of their pleasant scent. In China, vegetable oils were applied as a supplementary treatment alongside acupuncture.

Aromatherapy in the modern era

The expression ’aromatherapy’ was used for the first time by René-Maurice Gattafossé, French chemist, in 1928. He observed that the burn on his arm healed quickly, thanks to the lavender oil he dropped on it. He started studying the antiseptic effects of volatile oils. His work was continued by his compatriot, Dr Jean Valner, who healed the wounds of injured soldiers with volatile oils. Later on another French scientist, Marguerite Maury applied aromatherapy on his patients. The outstanding biochemist realized that the volatile oils absorbed through the skin and they spread through the entire body.
